Teaching

An overview of recent classes taught at the Blavatnik School of Government:

Politics of Policymaking
2013–17, 2019–present

One area of core teaching responsibility at the Blavatnik School is the delivery of the Politics of Policymaking (PoP), one of five core modules in the Blavatnik School of Government’s Masters in Public Policy (MPP) degree. I became convener of the politics module in 2015, leading to the module undergoing a complete overhaul in style and substance. I continue to co-convene this course.

Qualitative Methods for Public Policy
2022–present

Another area of core teaching responsibility at the Blavatnik School. This course is taught in the Blavatnik School’s new MSc in Public Policy degree. It provides an overview of the qualitative methods literature published in the last decades with case studies of policy-relevant research applied enough for our policy-oriented students.

Nationalism, Populism, and the Future of Democracy
2020–present

Together with former Israeli Minister of Education Yuli Tamir, I created and ran a new option course for the Blavatnik School MPP degree. This course analyses the rise of nationalism and populism and their twin impacts upon democracy, investigating how these forces interact in a range of country contexts.

Policy Challenge II
2016–17, 2019–21

I have taught for several years on Policy Challenge II. This course selects a discrete and contemporary public policy problem, assigns students to role play specific policymakers and challenges the students to realistically improve upon the policy status quo.

Executive Education
2021–present

I regularly teach in the School’s executive education programme.  I have taught at least one session in the Rising Public Leaders Programme and Executive Public Leaders Programme on the crafting of effective narratives.  In addition, I designed, managed and led a bespoke executive education programme for Northern Ireland parliamentarians.
